First 5 Things to Do After Getting a Positive Pregnancy Test

First, Congratulations! Whether you got your BFP on your first try or you have been waiting months or years for this…. You did it!! But I also know you may be thinking….. now what!

I have been where you are 5 times and honestly the “now what!?” thought comes every. single. time! However, as an experienced mom of 3, doula and childbirth educator here are the first 5 things I would do.

  1. Sit in the moment. Take time to go out with your partner. Celebrate this little life you are bringing into the world. If it’s your first, relish in the time with just the two of you.

  2. Take a second test. I am sure you have already done this…. but if you haven’t confirm the pregnancy yourself by taking a second either that same day or if you are in hopes of a darker line take it the following day. In my opinion, the test strips from the dollar store are perfect for this, but there is something magical about using a digital test and seeing “pregnant” pop up.

  3. Find a provider. If you don’t have an OB/Midwife do some research. Ask in you local facebook mom group, ask your friends or family if they live in the area, head to google, check your insurance network for approved providers as well. Once you have on in mind make a call for a PREGNANCY CONFIRMATION appointment. This is typically around weeks 4-7 and is just a blood draw. A typically healthy pregnancy generally won’t have an ultrasound until weeks 9-11. Sometimes you can get lucky with one at 8 weeks. ***Pro Tip: post anonymously on groups is a great way to ask for recommendations, especially if you aren’t telling people your news yet.

  4. Pick up some Prenatal Vitamins. There are many on the market. Some are marketed as being “clean” others are listed as being “highly rated.” I have taken different kinds with each of my pregnancies depending on our financial situation, what my body could withstand or what was available at the time. In the end of the day, make sure you find a vitamin that has Folic Acid, Calcium and Iron. ****Pro tip: If you get nauseous with your Prenatal, take it right before bed.

  5. Create a note in your Notes app titled “Questions for the dr” You will be asked at every appointment if you have any questions. If you are like me totally forget all your questions in that moment and then when you remember them agan…. your next appointment is weeks away. So, start today with a running note to jot down any questions you may have. When you get asked that question, just pull out your phone. If its something you aren’t concerned with anymore… just skip it.

OK! That was alot! But, you have time. Like tip 1 says…. just be in the moment things are going to be changing fast for the next few years as you go through pregnancy, birth, postpartum and new motherhood, but right now just be
